About Koumala
Koumala is a rural town and coastal locality in Queensland's Mackay Region, situated approximately 62 kilometres south of Mackay and 25 kilometres south of Sarina, within the Bruce Highway corridor. The locality covers a vast area of over 830 square kilometres and recorded a population of 772 at the 2021 Census. Its character is defined by the wide open landscapes of the Central Queensland coast, with cattle grazing and sugar cane farming historically underpinning the local economy.
The eastern edge of Koumala borders Cape Palmerston National Park, which protects the rugged coastline surrounding Mount Funnel and Cape Palmerston — offering walking tracks and scenic coastal views largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism. The Hatfield Range (known locally as the Koumala Range) rises to the west, and the main coal rail corridor connecting the Bowen Basin mines to the Hay Point port passes through the locality. Koumala suits those seeking an affordable rural lifestyle close to the Whitsunday region, with Sarina providing the nearest access to schools, shops, and services.
Koumala falls under postcode 4738 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mirani electorate.
