About Lake Charm
Lake Charm is a small town in the Shire of Gannawarra, in the Mallee region of north-western Victoria, situated approximately 296 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 19 kilometres north-west of Kerang. The town takes its name from the picturesque Lake Charm, a freshwater lake covering around 457 hectares that forms the centrepiece of the community. With a population of around 147 residents, Lake Charm is a quiet and close-knit rural locality characterised by flat farming landscapes, waterways, and a relaxed country atmosphere.
Lake Charm is popular among visitors and locals alike for water-based recreation, including waterskiing, boating, duck hunting, and fishing — the lake is particularly well known for its large redfin. The nearby Racecourse Lake provides additional fishing and picnic opportunities. Everyday services are accessed in Kerang or Swan Hill, and the surrounding agricultural land supports grain and livestock farming. The community is small but resilient, with a history tied to both agriculture and the railway.
Lake Charm falls under postcode 3581 and is governed by Shire of Gannawarra Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
