About Lake Ninan
Lake Ninan is a remote rural locality in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located approximately 30 kilometres east of Moora. Covering over 242 square kilometres, the area is named after Lake Ninan, a large ephemeral salt lake that forms part of the region's distinctive arid landscape. The locality had a population of just 17 people at the 2021 Census, making it one of Western Australia's most sparsely populated localities.
The surrounding land is used predominantly for dryland agriculture, including wheat and sheep farming typical of the Western Australian Wheatbelt. The salt lake is a notable natural feature and provides habitat for waterbirds when seasonal rains create temporary flooding. Residents rely on Moora for all essential services including schools, healthcare, and shopping, while the broader region offers wide open spaces and the quiet lifestyle of rural Western Australia.
Lake Ninan falls under postcode 6603 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
