About Lawes
Lawes is a small rural locality in the Lockyer Valley Region of Queensland, situated on the eastern outskirts of the town of Gatton, approximately 90 kilometres west of Brisbane. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 105 residents within its compact 7.1 square kilometre area. The locality is named after Sir John Bennett Lawes, a pioneer of agricultural science, reflecting the area's deep ties to farming and research.
Lawes is home to the University of Queensland's Gatton Campus, established in 1897 as the Queensland Agricultural College and one of Australia's oldest agricultural teaching institutions. The campus includes the UQ Gatton Solar Research Facility, a heritage-listed precinct, and extensive research farms. Residents benefit from proximity to Gatton's shops, schools, and services, and the rich agricultural land of the Lockyer Valley — often called Australia's salad bowl — surrounds the locality on all sides.
Lawes falls under postcode 4343 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lockyer electorate.
