About Lefroy
Lefroy is a rural locality in the George Town Council area of northern Tasmania, situated approximately 46 kilometres north of Launceston and about 16 kilometres east of the township of George Town. Covering around 33.8 square kilometres, the locality lies in the Bridport Road corridor north of the Tamar River estuary. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 82 residents, up from 76 in 2016, representing a modest growth trend in the area. Lefroy falls within the federal electorate of Bass and the state electorate of Bass (Windermere).
Lefroy has a rich goldmining heritage: gold was discovered here in 1870 and by the turn of the 20th century the field supported a population of around 5,000, making it the second richest goldfield in Tasmania after Beaconsfield. The last of the major mines, the New Pinafore, closed in 1908 and commercial mining ceased entirely by 1914, but the landscape still bears traces of this storied history. Today the locality is quiet and agricultural in character, with residents typically commuting to George Town or Launceston for services, work, and shopping. The surrounding area offers bushland walks, open farmland, and a strong sense of the Tasmanian rural heritage that defines this corner of the state.
Lefroy falls under postcode 7252 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (Windermere) electorate.
