About Legerwood
Legerwood is a quiet rural locality and small town in the Dorset Council area of north-east Tasmania, located approximately 24 kilometres south-east of Scottsdale. The locality spans around 41 square kilometres of rolling agricultural and timber country in the island's north-east region, with a population of 204 people. The area is characterised by open farmland, state forest, and the gentle pace of rural Tasmanian life typical of the Dorset district.
Legerwood is best known for its remarkable Carved Memorial Trees — a series of roadside trees sculpted by chainsaw artist Eddie Freeman in 2005, depicting World War I soldiers as a lasting tribute to the local men and women who served in the Great War. The sculptures have become a surprising and touching attraction for visitors passing through the north-east. The locality sits within a productive agricultural region, offering a peaceful rural lifestyle with access to the services of Scottsdale to the north-west and Launceston approximately 75 kilometres to the south-west.
Legerwood falls under postcode 7263 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
