About Leichardt
Leichardt is a small rural locality straddling the City of Greater Bendigo and the Shire of Loddon in central Victoria, situated approximately 35 to 40 kilometres north-west of the Bendigo city centre. Spanning a substantial 75 square kilometres of semi-arid farmland and bushland, the locality recorded a population of 167 at the 2021 Census. Leichardt takes its name from the renowned 19th-century explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, and the area carries a long history tied to Victoria's gold rush era, with the Leichardt goldfield listed among the historic Bendigo district mining sites.
The locality's history includes a community school that opened in 1874 and operated until its closure in 1993 — a testament to over a century of rural settlement. Today, Leichardt is characterised by open farming land, sparse settlement, and the quiet landscapes of central Victoria's goldfields country. Bendigo, one of Victoria's largest and most vibrant regional cities, is within reach and offers residents access to healthcare, education, arts, retail, and V/Line rail connections to Melbourne.
Leichardt falls under postcode 3516 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
