About Leitchville
Leitchville is a small rural town in northern Victoria, situated within the Shire of Gannawarra approximately 262 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 17 kilometres south-east of Cohuna. With a 2021 Census population of 576, the locality spans a broad agricultural area of around 130 square kilometres on the northern Victorian plains. The township was gazetted in 1929 and takes its name from Duncan Leitch, a former manager of the historic Gunbower pastoral station.
Dairy farming has long been the backbone of the local economy, and the surrounding landscape is defined by irrigated pastures and flat open farmland typical of the Goulburn-Murray region. The nearby Kow Swamp Archaeological Site is of significant cultural and scientific importance, having provided major insights into the origins of Indigenous Australians. Residents rely on Cohuna and Kerang for most services, while the town maintains a close-knit community supported by the Leitchville-Gunbower Australian Rules football club.
Leitchville falls under postcode 3567 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
