About Leyburn
Leyburn is a small rural town and locality in Queensland's Southern Downs Region, located approximately 66 kilometres south-west of Toowoomba and 195 kilometres south-west of Brisbane on the rolling plains of the Darling Downs. The locality spans around 254 square kilometres of open grazing country and recorded a population of 566 at the 2021 Census. Named in the 1840s after the market town of Leyburn in Yorkshire, England, the settlement developed as a pastoral service centre and retains a strong historic character.
Leyburn is perhaps best known for hosting the annual Leyburn Sprints, a popular vintage and classic car sprint event that transforms the town's streets into a temporary racing circuit and draws enthusiasts from across Queensland. The historic Royal Hotel is a local landmark, and the Toowoomba–Karara Road provides the main access route, with Leyburn State Forest situated to the east. Beyond the sprints, the town offers a handful of local businesses serving the surrounding grazing community, while most residents travel to Toowoomba or Warwick for larger shopping, healthcare, and schooling needs.
Leyburn falls under postcode 4365 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
