About Liawenee
Liawenee is a remote highland locality in Tasmania's Central Highlands, situated near Great Lake and the River Ouse approximately 122 kilometres north-north-west of Hobart. Established in 1920 as a Hydro Tasmania worker village, Liawenee sits at an elevation of around 1,065 metres above sea level and is widely recognised as the coldest permanently inhabited place in Australia. The locality is home to just a handful of residents, including Tasmania Police and Inland Fisheries Service personnel, in one of the most isolated settings in the country.
Liawenee's name derives from a Tasmanian Aboriginal word meaning "frigid", a fitting description for a place that regularly experiences sub-zero temperatures and snowfall even in summer. Great Lake, one of Australia's largest natural freshwater lakes, lies on the locality's doorstep and is celebrated as a premier trout fishing destination, attracting anglers from across the country. The Central Highlands landscape offers spectacular wilderness scenery, bushwalking, and wildlife watching for adventure-seekers willing to make the journey to this extraordinary corner of Tasmania.
Liawenee falls under postcode 7030 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Rumney) electorate.
