About Longerenong
Longerenong is a rural locality in the Wimmera region of north-western Victoria, situated approximately 13 kilometres north-east of Horsham and 320 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. The name is derived from a Jardwadjali word meaning "the dividing of the waters," reflecting the deep First Nations connection to the surrounding Wimmera River country. Covering nearly 246 square kilometres of flat, fertile agricultural land, the locality had a population of 237 at the 2021 Census and is best known as the home of Longerenong College, one of Australia's leading agricultural training institutions.
Longerenong College — affectionately known as "Longy" — has trained generations of Australian farming and agribusiness professionals in agronomy, wool classing, and rural merchandise management since the late 19th century. The surrounding district is prime cropping country, forming part of the Wimmera's wheat and canola belt. Horsham, just 13 kilometres to the south-west, serves as the regional centre offering hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and rail connections, while the broader Wimmera-Mallee region provides a wide open rural lifestyle under a vast sky.
Longerenong falls under postcode 3399 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
