About Lonnavale
Lonnavale is a small rural locality in the Huon Valley Council area of southern Tasmania, located approximately 23 kilometres west of the regional town of Huonville. Covering an expansive 208 square kilometres, the locality is bordered to the south-east by the Huon River and sits at the edge of the vast Southwest National Park wilderness. The 2021 Census recorded 116 residents, reflecting its remote and lightly settled character deep in the Tasmanian south-west.
Lonnavale offers a genuine off-grid lifestyle surrounded by some of Australia's most dramatic wilderness, with the Huon Valley's apple orchards and forests forming a spectacular backdrop. The locality name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal Tasmanian word meaning 'windpipe and stone', hinting at the rugged terrain of the area. The nearest services are in Huonville, where residents access shops, schools, and healthcare, while Hobart is accessible within roughly an hour's drive via the Huon Highway.
Lonnavale falls under postcode 7109 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Derwent) electorate.
