About Lorinna
Lorinna is a unique and remote rural locality in north-west Tasmania, situated within the Kentish local government area approximately 38 kilometres south-west of Sheffield. Covering around 38.4 square kilometres of deeply forested and hilly terrain, Lorinna sits in a valley surrounded by the localities of Cethana, Mount Roland, and the Mersey Forest. With a population of 81 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, it is one of Tasmania's most distinctive small communities — widely known as the state's only gated community, with limited road access that underscores its secluded character.
Lorinna is remarkable for its complete independence from the Tasmanian electricity grid, with the entire community relying on micro-hydro systems powered by local creeks and supplemented by solar energy. The valley has developed a strong culture of sustainable and off-grid living, attracting those committed to self-sufficiency, permaculture, and regenerative land management. Access to the community can be challenging — sections of Lorinna Road have been closed, and alternative routes include unsealed roads requiring four-wheel-drive vehicles in wet or icy conditions. Sheffield, the nearest service town, provides the primary shops, services, and schools for Lorinna residents.
Lorinna falls under postcode 7306 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
