About Lowbank
Lowbank is a tiny rural locality in South Australia's Riverland region, tucked between the Sturt Highway and the southern bank of the Murray River east of Waikerie. Covering approximately 8 square kilometres, the locality takes its name from its position on a gradual slope descending from the highway to the river, in contrast to the steep cliffs found elsewhere along this stretch of the Murray. With just 22 residents recorded in the 2021 census, Lowbank is one of South Australia's smallest populated localities, characterised by citrus orchards, market gardens, and river frontage properties. It falls within the Chaffey state electorate and the federal electorate of Barker.
Lowbank offers a uniquely tranquil lifestyle defined by the Murray River, with river frontage prized for fishing, boating, and water recreation. The nearby town of Waikerie (approximately 8 kilometres west) provides supermarkets, schools, medical services, a swimming pool, and the Waikerie Gliding Club. The locality appeals to retirees, hobby farmers, and those seeking affordable river frontage in a quiet setting, with a strong horticultural tradition reflecting the Riverland's agricultural heritage. The Sturt Highway provides a direct link to Renmark to the east and Adelaide to the west.
Lowbank falls under postcode 5330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
