About Malarga
Malarga is a small rural locality in south-east Queensland, located approximately 35 kilometres south-west of Maryborough within the Fraser Coast Regional Council area. With just 15 residents recorded in the 2021 Census and covering around 200 square kilometres of agricultural and bushland terrain, Malarga is one of the more remote and sparsely settled parts of the Fraser Coast region. The locality sits at approximately 25 kilometres from the Bruce Highway corridor and is characterised by sugarcane farming, grazing country and remnant native vegetation.
The farming heritage of Malarga reflects the broader agricultural character of the Fraser Coast hinterland, with small-scale grazing and timber country dominating the landscape. Residents rely on Maryborough and the larger coastal city of Hervey Bay for shopping, healthcare, education and other services. The locality is a quiet and tightly knit rural community that values the wide open spaces and agricultural lifestyle of the Queensland hinterland.
Malarga falls under postcode 4620 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
