About Manangatang
Manangatang (pronounced mə-NANG-gə-tang) is a small town in the Mallee region of north-western Victoria, located approximately 412 kilometres from Melbourne and within the Rural City of Swan Hill. The name derives from an Aboriginal term combining 'manang' (land) and 'kaaiti' (water), reflecting the significance of water in this dry inland region. At the 2021 Census, Manangatang had a population of 274, spread across a vast 448 square kilometre locality that exemplifies the flat, sun-baked Mallee landscape.
The town's main street, Wattle Street, is the heart of the community, with local services including a hotel and the Manangatang Mallee Garden. The surrounding area is characterised by dryland grain farming — particularly wheat and barley — and sheep grazing, which form the economic backbone of the district. A pleasant drive toward Robinvale leads to the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, a remarkable destination for birdwatching and native wildlife, while Swan Hill, 85 kilometres to the south-east, provides the nearest full range of retail, medical, and educational services.
Manangatang falls under postcode 3546 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
