About Mangalore
Mangalore is a small rural locality in central Victoria, situated approximately 12 kilometres north of Seymour and around 110 kilometres north of Melbourne, within the Shire of Strathbogie local government area. The locality covers nearly 69 square kilometres of agricultural and pastoral land in the Goulburn Valley region, accessible via both the Goulburn Valley Highway and the nearby Hume Highway. With a 2021 Census population of 183, Mangalore is a sparsely settled farming community whose name was bestowed in the 1830s by Lt Colonel Joseph Anderson, who named his vast landholding after the Indian city of Mangalore.
The locality is characterised by cattle grazing, mixed farming, and the open paddocks typical of the northern Victorian plains on the fringe of the Strathbogie Ranges. The Mangalore Hotel is a local landmark serving the farming community and travellers along the highway corridor. Seymour to the south provides the nearest access to supermarkets, schools, and services, and the Hume Highway connection makes commuting toward Melbourne or Shepparton practical. The area suits those seeking a genuine rural lifestyle with reasonable transport links to broader centres.
Mangalore falls under postcode 3663 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
