About Manton
Manton is a small outer rural locality of Darwin in the Northern Territory, situated within the Litchfield Municipality approximately 50 kilometres south of Darwin's CBD. The locality takes its name from Manton Dam on the Manton River, which was itself named by Government Resident B. T. Finniss in honour of his second-in-command James Thomas Manton. With a population of just 89 at the 2016 census, it is one of Darwin's sparsely populated rural fringes. The area is characterised by tropical savanna, seasonal waterways, and large rural lots.
Manton offers a remote rural lifestyle with close connections to Litchfield National Park, one of the Top End's most popular natural attractions. The surrounding area features waterfalls, swimming holes, and dramatic sandstone formations. Daily services are limited in Manton itself, with residents relying on nearby Darwin or the small communities of Batchelor and Berry Springs for shopping and services. The area attracts residents who value privacy, space, and immersion in the Territory's unique natural environment.
Manton falls under postcode 837 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Goyder electorate.
