About Marysville
Marysville is a small mountain town in the Shire of Murrindindi in Victoria, situated approximately 99 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 34 kilometres north-east of Healesville in the Great Dividing Range. Set at an elevation of 430 metres, the town had a 2021 Census population of 501 residents and covers nearly 200 square kilometres of forested Victorian high country. Marysville is defined by remarkable resilience — the town was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires on 7 February 2009, which claimed 45 lives and destroyed around 90 per cent of buildings, but has steadily rebuilt and grown its population from 226 in 2011 to 394 in 2016 and 501 by 2021.
Marysville has long been a beloved tourism destination for Melbourne day-trippers and weekenders, known for its lush fern gullies, tall mountain ash forests, and the spectacular Steavenson Falls — one of Victoria's highest waterfalls. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, located nearby, offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The rebuilt township has a charming main street with cafes, art galleries, and accommodation, attracting visitors seeking natural beauty and cool-climate escapes. Marysville's strong community spirit and continued recovery make it a place of enduring character in Victoria's mountain landscape.
Marysville falls under postcode 3779 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eildon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
