About Matong
Matong is a small rural locality in the Riverina region of New South Wales, situated approximately 37 kilometres east of Narrandera and 26 kilometres west of Coolamon, within the postcode area of 2652. Positioned along the Canola Way agricultural corridor, the area is characterised by wide open farmland devoted to grain cropping and livestock grazing. The 2016 Census recorded a population of just 164 residents, reflecting its character as a true farming community.
Matong is notable for its unusually strong Australian rules football culture — an outlier in an otherwise rugby league-dominated state — driven by its location in the Canola Way pocket that stretches from Grong Grong to Marrar. The locality has a community hall and a small sporting club but relies on Narrandera and Coolamon for shops, schools, and health services. Life in Matong revolves around the rhythms of the land, with close-knit community ties and abundant open space.
Matong falls under postcode 2652 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Wagga Wagga electorate.
