About Meckering
Meckering is a small Wheatbelt town in Western Australia, located on the Great Eastern Highway approximately 130 kilometres east of Perth within the Shire of Cunderdin. With a 2021 Census population of 232, Meckering is spread across a substantial area of 216 square kilometres of farming land typical of the Western Australian Wheatbelt. The town is permanently etched in Australian history following the devastating earthquake of 14 October 1968, which registered 6.9 on the Richter Scale with the epicentre almost directly beneath the town, leaving a fault scarp scar stretching 32 kilometres long and up to 2 metres high.
Today Meckering is a quiet farming hamlet where wheat and sheep grazing underpin the local economy, and the preserved earthquake fault line is a notable tourist attraction maintained by the Shire of Cunderdin. The town sits midway between Northam to the west and Cunderdin to the east along the Great Eastern Highway, providing highway-side access to travellers heading to the Wheatbelt and beyond. Local services are minimal, with residents relying on Northam or Cunderdin for most everyday needs. The earthquake museum and fault line interpretation are a drawcard for visitors interested in Australia's seismic history.
Meckering falls under postcode 6405 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
