About Meribah
Meribah is a remote rural settlement in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, located approximately 10 kilometres from the Victorian border, 62 kilometres north of Pinnaroo, and 37 kilometres south-east of Loxton. It covers a vast 331 square kilometres of mallee scrubland and agricultural land within the District Council of Loxton Waikerie, with a recorded population of just 39 at the 2021 census. The township was briefly a railway terminus in 1913 before the Barmera line was extended to Paringa, and it was officially proclaimed in November 1914. Its biblical name comes from a nearby bore, referencing the place where Moses struck the rock to produce water.
Meribah is a true outback-fringe settlement, characterised by vast open plains, dry mallee vegetation, and a sparse farming community. Agriculture, particularly cereal cropping and sheep grazing, underpins the local economy across the expansive surrounding paddocks. The nearest significant town services are found in Pinnaroo to the south, which offers a supermarket, medical facilities, and a school. Meribah suits those who embrace an isolated, self-sufficient rural lifestyle and have a deep connection to the land and the quiet solitude of the Murray Mallee.
Meribah falls under postcode 5311 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
