The locality covers about 221 square kilometres of wheat and sheep farming country typical of the southern Wheatbelt. With only 13 residents recorded in the 2021 census, Merilup is one of Western Australia's most sparsely populated localities, having declined from 21 residents in 2016. Three schools once served the area between 1922 and 1950, reflecting a once larger farming community.

The area is suited to those fully committed to an agricultural lifestyle, with no public services, shops, or transport within the locality itself.
