About Miena
Miena is a small remote locality perched at approximately 1,052 metres elevation on the southern shore of Great Lake in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, around 120 kilometres north-west of Hobart. It falls under the Central Highlands Council and had a 2021 census population of 127 residents. The name Miena, meaning "lagoon-like", was given by Hydro Tasmania and reflects the Aboriginal heritage of the Luggermairrenerpairer clan who inhabited this high country for thousands of years.
Miena is best known as one of Tasmania's premier freshwater fishing destinations, with Great Lake drawing anglers from across the country seeking brown and rainbow trout. Accommodation options include lakeside hotels, self-contained lodges, and numerous holiday shacks. The climate is distinctly alpine — cold and often harsh — with mean maximum temperatures around 10°C and frequent frosts, making the locality a true highland retreat for those who embrace rugged, outdoor Tasmanian life.
Miena falls under postcode 7030 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Rumney) electorate.
