About Minilya
Minilya is a remote locality in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, situated on the North West Coastal Highway approximately 100 kilometres north of Carnarvon. The locality serves primarily as a highway junction where travellers diverge toward Exmouth (220 km to the north-west) and the Ningaloo Coast, or continue north toward Nanutarra Roadhouse. With a population of just 20 people recorded in the 2021 census, Minilya spans a vast 8,873 square kilometres of semi-arid pastoral land along the Lyndon and Minilya Rivers.
Life in Minilya is defined by the rhythms of remote pastoral life, roadhouse services, and the vast open landscape of the mid-west Gascoyne. The Minilya Roadhouse serves travellers making the long drive between Perth and the Pilbara or Exmouth, offering fuel, food, and rest. The surrounding station country supports sheep and cattle grazing, and the nearby Minilya River corridor provides habitat for native flora and fauna. Visitors passing through often use it as a fuel stop on the way to the world-renowned Ningaloo Reef.
Minilya falls under postcode 6701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
