About Mission River
Mission River is a vast coastal rural locality in Far North Queensland, situated approximately 12 kilometres south-east of Weipa on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, covering over 5,400 square kilometres of tropical savanna, wetlands, and coastal mangroves. The locality is split between the Shire of Cook and the Aboriginal Shire of Napranum, and the 2021 census recorded a population of 974 people. The area includes several enclaves that form part of Weipa Town, including Evans Landing, Nanum, and Weipa Airport.
Mission River locality encompasses lands of the Linngithigh people and reflects the deep cultural heritage of the Western Cape York region. The economy is closely tied to Weipa, home to one of the world's largest bauxite mining operations run by Rio Tinto. The surrounding natural environment — mangrove estuaries, savanna woodland, and the Mission River itself draining into Albatross Bay and the Gulf of Carpentaria — supports exceptional fishing, barramundi angling, and wildlife watching.
Mission River falls under postcode 4874 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
