Moonan Brook is a remote rural locality in the Upper Hunter Shire of New South Wales, nestled in the foothills of the Mount Royal Range approximately 55 kilometres north-east of Scone. It is one of the most sparsely populated localities in the Hunter region, with fewer than 20 residents spread across nearly 200 square kilometres of rugged bushland and grazing country. The locality takes its name from the Moonan Brook, a tributary of the Hunter River.
The area is gateway territory for adventurers heading into the spectacular Barrington Tops National Park and the Mount Royal Range. Cattle grazing is the dominant land use, and the handful of properties here reflect a deep connection to the land. There are no shops or services locally — Scone is the nearest town for all supplies and services, accessed via a winding rural road through scenic mountain country.
