About Moonta
Moonta is a historic copper-mining town on the Yorke Peninsula, 165 kilometres north-north-west of Adelaide within the Copper Coast Council area. Established in 1863 during the great copper rush that transformed the region, Moonta is one of three towns collectively known as the Copper Coast — or 'Little Cornwall' — alongside Kadina and Wallaroo. With a population of around 624 in the town centre and a median household income of $36,523, Moonta has a proud working-class heritage and a strong sense of community identity.
Moonta is celebrated for its extraordinary Cornish heritage, with thousands of Cornish miners having settled here in the 19th century. The Moonta Mines State Heritage Area preserves historic engine houses, miner's cottages, and the acclaimed Moonta Mines Museum, offering a vivid window into South Australia's industrial past. The town hosts the biennial Kernewek Lowender festival — one of Australia's largest Celtic cultural celebrations. Moonta Bay, a short drive away, provides a sheltered beach and calm waters popular with families and anglers, while the town centre features cafes, heritage streetscapes, and a relaxed coastal ambience that draws visitors and retirees year-round.
Moonta falls under postcode 5558 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
