About Morawa
Morawa is a country town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, situated within the Shire of Morawa approximately 370 kilometres north of Perth and 114 kilometres east of Dongara on the Avon–Mullewa railway corridor. The town was established in 1913 following the extension of the railway line, and takes its name from an Indigenous Australian word thought to refer to the bilby. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 459 residents across a substantial 190 square kilometre area, reflecting its role as a dispersed rural service centre for the surrounding wheat and sheep farming district. Morawa sits at an elevation of 274 metres on the undulating Yilgarn Craton landscape.
Morawa serves the broader Shire of Morawa agricultural community, offering essential services including a primary school, medical centre, supermarket, hotel, and community facilities along the main Winfield Street. The town is well known among wildflower enthusiasts — the Mid West region around Morawa produces spectacular wildflower displays during the spring season (August to October), drawing visitors from across WA. The Morawa Shire also administers the nearby Latham and Canna localities. Life in Morawa centres on grain farming cycles, community events, and the open character of the Western Australian grain belt, with a strong volunteer spirit evident in local sporting clubs and organisations.
Morawa falls under postcode 6623 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
