About Mount Barker Summit
Mount Barker Summit is a small hilltop locality in the southern Adelaide Hills, situated approximately 35 kilometres south-east of the Adelaide CBD within the Mount Barker District Council area. The locality encompasses the prominent 513-metre summit and its surrounding slopes, covering just over 8 square kilometres of conservation-listed bushland and semi-rural residential land on the edge of the Mount Barker urban area. With a 2021 Census population of around 100 residents, the locality is characterised by its elevated, semi-rural character and the sweeping panoramic views it offers across the Adelaide Plains and surrounding hills.
The Mount Barker Summit Conservation Park is the locality's centrepiece, protecting significant biodiversity including threatened plant and animal species, as well as holding deep cultural significance for the Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri peoples as an ancient ceremonial and burial site. Walking trails — including a popular 500-metre return path to the summit and a 2-kilometre circuit — attract visitors and residents alike for panoramic views stretching from Mount Lofty in the north-west to the Lakes and Coorong in the south. The nearby Mount Barker township, just a few minutes away, provides full retail, schooling, and health services, while Adelaide Metro bus services and the South Eastern Freeway offer commuter access to the Adelaide CBD in approximately 40 minutes.
Mount Barker Summit falls under postcode 5251 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kavel electorate.
