About Mount Cooper
Mount Cooper is a large rural locality on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, situated approximately 30 kilometres northwest of Kimba and around 480 kilometres northwest of Adelaide. Covering 183 square kilometres, it is an extremely sparsely populated farming district on the semi-arid plains of the central Eyre Peninsula. The locality is named after a modest elevation in the otherwise flat to gently undulating cereal-growing landscape.
Mount Cooper is dedicated to dryland broadacre farming, primarily wheat, barley, and sheep grazing on the red-brown soils of the Eyre Peninsula. The landscape is vast and open, with wide horizons and scattered mallee scrub on uncleared land. There are no local services — residents travel to Kimba, known as the 'halfway point across Australia', for basic supplies, or to Port Augusta or Port Lincoln for comprehensive services. The locality suits those committed to large-scale farming in a challenging semi-arid climate.
Mount Cooper falls under postcode 5671 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
