About Mount French
Mount French is a rural locality in the Scenic Rim Region of Queensland, nestled around the mountain of the same name approximately 5 kilometres west of the town of Boonah and about 100 kilometres south-west of Brisbane. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 105 residents across 16.7 square kilometres. The eastern half of the locality is lower-lying grazing country between 200 and 280 metres elevation, while the western half rises steeply to the twin peaks of Mount French — the North Peak at 473 metres and the South Peak at 598 metres.
The locality is dominated by the Moogerah Peaks National Park, which protects the distinctive rhyolite columns of Mount French and is one of south-east Queensland's premier rock climbing destinations, with over 400 established routes at the renowned Frog Buttress. Accessible walking trails lead to panoramic lookouts including Logans Lookout and the Mee-Bor-Rum walk, named for the Yuggerah and Ugarapul peoples' traditional name for the North Peak. The town of Boonah, just a 10 minute drive away, provides shops, schools, and services, while the wider Scenic Rim offers wineries, lakes, and national parks.
Mount French falls under postcode 4310 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Scenic Rim electorate.
