About Mount Mulligan

Mount Mulligan is a historic ghost town and rural locality in Queensland's Shire of Mareeba, located approximately 157 kilometres west of Cairns in Far North Queensland. Established in 1910 as a coal mining settlement, it was abandoned following the catastrophic Mount Mulligan mine disaster of 1921, in which 75 miners perished in an underground explosion — Queensland's deadliest mining tragedy. Today the locality records no permanent residents, yet the site retains haunting relics of its former life including a solitary chimney stack, a cemetery and overgrown mine workings set against the striking backdrop of the Ngarrabullgan massif.

The locality holds deep cultural significance for the Djungan people, the traditional custodians of the Ngarrabullgan mountain range that towers up to 400 metres above the former township. The sandstone and conglomerate escarpment is a sacred site with documented human occupation dating back 40,000 years. Today Mount Mulligan attracts heritage enthusiasts, bushwalkers and history seekers curious about its dramatic past. The remote wilderness setting, vast station country and proximity to the Dimbulah and Mount Carbine outback towns make it a destination for those exploring Far North Queensland's less-travelled landscapes.

Mount Mulligan falls under postcode 4871 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
