About Mullewa
Mullewa is a historic town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, located 450 kilometres north of Perth and 98 kilometres east-north-east of Geraldton. Established in 1894 when the government built a narrow-gauge railway connecting it to Geraldton, Mullewa sits at an elevation of 281 metres and falls within the City of Greater Geraldton local government area. The 2021 census recorded a population of approximately 356 in the broader locality, making it a small but enduring service town for the surrounding pastoral and agricultural region.
Mullewa is renowned throughout Western Australia as a wildflower destination, particularly in spring when the surrounding countryside bursts into colour. The town is one of the few places in Western Australia where the rare wreath flower (Lechenaultia macrantha) grows in the wild. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops, and the town functions as a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. Mullewa features a school, a medical centre, shops, and heritage buildings, including the notable Monsignor Hawes-designed Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — a remarkable example of ecclesiastical architecture in the outback.
Mullewa falls under postcode 6630 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
