About Murrindindi
Murrindindi is a rural locality in the Shire of Murrindindi, set along the valley of the Murrindindi River approximately 101 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 17 kilometres south-east of the service town of Yea. The name comes from the Woiwurrung language of central Victoria, meaning "living in the mountains," and the forested ranges and valley landscapes spread across a broad 229 square kilometres live up to that description. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 114 residents, reflecting the sparse settlement typical of this alpine foothills region within the Indi federal electorate.
The Murrindindi Scenic Reserve is the locality's best-known attraction, drawing bushwalkers, swimmers, and picnickers to its walking trails, waterfalls, and cascades along the Murrindindi River. The nearby town of Yea provides shops, schools, and essential services for the community. Murrindindi appeals to nature lovers and those seeking a deeply rural lifestyle in the Victorian highlands, with easy access to the Yea River corridor, regional Victoria's scenic countryside, and weekend escapes from Melbourne just over an hour away.
Murrindindi falls under postcode 3717 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Yan Yean (Northern Victoria) electorate.
