About Nabowla
Nabowla is a small rural locality in the Dorset Council area of north-east Tasmania, located approximately 16 kilometres west of the regional town of Scottsdale. The locality covers around 101 square kilometres and recorded a population of 131 at the 2021 Census, with the Denison River and Little Forester River forming part of its western boundary. Nabowla is an Aboriginal Tasmanian word meaning 'river,' and the locality was formally gazetted in 1964 within the scenic agricultural country of Tasmania's north-east.
Nabowla is perhaps best known as home to the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, one of the largest lavender farms in the Southern Hemisphere and a major tourism drawcard in Tasmania's north-east. The estate draws visitors from across Australia and internationally, particularly during the summer blooming season when the fields turn a stunning shade of purple. Beyond the famous lavender farm, the locality is a quiet agricultural area with rolling farmland and bush, where residents access most daily services and shopping in Scottsdale, just 16 kilometres to the east.
Nabowla falls under postcode 7260 and is governed by Dorset Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (Windermere) electorate.
