Nabowla is an Aboriginal Tasmanian word meaning 'river,' and the locality was formally gazetted in 1964 within the scenic agricultural country of Tasmania's north-east.

Nabowla is perhaps best known as home to the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, one of the largest lavender farms in the Southern Hemisphere and a major tourism drawcard in Tasmania's north-east.
