About Nalangil
Nalangil is a small rural locality in the Shire of Colac Otway in south-western Victoria, situated approximately 12 kilometres north-west of Colac on the eastern fringe of Lake Corangamite, Australia's largest permanent saltwater lake. The locality covers a compact 17.7 square kilometres of gently undulating volcanic country with rich, improved pastures well suited to dairy and beef farming. With a 2021 Census population of 72 residents, Nalangil is a quiet and tightly-knit farming community typical of the Colac Otway agricultural hinterland.
Farming is the lifeblood of Nalangil, with properties used for dairy, beef breeding, and mixed agriculture taking advantage of the naturally fertile soils and reliable bore water supply that characterise the volcanic plains of this part of Victoria. Colac, about 12 kilometres to the south-east, provides residents with access to shopping, schools, medical services, and V/Line rail connections to Geelong and Melbourne. The broader Colac Otway region also encompasses the Otway Ranges, the Great Ocean Road, and popular natural attractions such as the Otway fly and Hopetoun Falls, all within a short drive from Nalangil.
Nalangil falls under postcode 3249 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Polwarth (Western Victoria) electorate.
