With a 2021 Census population of just 104 residents across nearly 100 square kilometres, it is a sparsely settled pastoral area along the East Chapman River. The name Narra Tarra is of Aboriginal origin, widely held to mean 'Hill Camp', and the locality has a long pastoral heritage dating back to the 1850s.
The area is best known for the heritage-listed Narra Tarra Homestead, built from 1853 and placed on the State Heritage Register in 2003, along with its outbuildings, shearing sheds, and cemetery. Residents rely on the nearby city of Geraldton for shopping, health services, and amenities, with access via the scenic Moonyoonooka–Narra Tarra Road through Chapman Valley.
