About Netherby
Netherby is a small rural town in Victoria's Wimmera-Mallee region, situated approximately 406 kilometres north-west of Melbourne within the Shire of Hindmarsh. With a population of 111 residents spread across a vast 423 square kilometres of flat mallee and agricultural land, Netherby is one of the most sparsely settled localities in western Victoria. The area predominantly supports broadacre grain farming — including wheat and barley — with a household income reflective of the modest economic conditions common in remote farming communities.
Netherby has an unusual naming history: originally called Warraquil, it was renamed Netherby in 1886 after a British ship wrecked on King Island in Bass Strait, whose rescued emigrants settled in the district. The nearest service centre is Nhill, approximately 33 kilometres to the south, where residents access shops, schools, and medical services. The locality's flat, open landscape and deeply agricultural character make it a place for those genuinely connected to the land, offering the peace and space of the Mallee far from urban centres.
Netherby falls under postcode 3418 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
