About New Italy
New Italy is a small rural locality in the Richmond Valley region of northern New South Wales, situated on the Pacific Highway approximately 15 kilometres south of Woodburn and 70 kilometres north of Grafton, within the Richmond Valley Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 249 residents spread across 71.7 square kilometres, it is a quiet, sparsely settled agricultural community. The locality is steeped in history as Australia's first Italian settlement, established in 1882 when immigrants from the Veneto region of northern Italy took up farming land in the Northern Rivers district.
The area's centrepiece is the New Italy Museum complex on the Pacific Highway, which features a Cultural Pavilion, the Tastes of New Italy Café, a glass-blowing workshop, and an Italian gift shop celebrating the heritage of Italian settlers in the Northern Rivers. Surrounding land is characterised by cane fields, wetlands, and state forest, with the Bungawalbyn wetlands to the west. The locality appeals to heritage travellers and those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle within reach of Byron Bay to the north and the services of Lismore to the south.
New Italy falls under postcode 2472 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lismore electorate.
