About Newman

Newman is a remote mining town in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, located approximately 1,186 kilometres north of Perth via the Great Northern Highway and just 9 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn. With a population of around 6,456, it serves as the administrative centre of the Shire of East Pilbara and is dominated by the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine — one of the largest open-cut iron ore operations in the world, operated by BHP. The town was purpose-built in the early 1970s to support mining operations and sits at an elevation of 462 metres on the edge of the Ophthalmia Range. It is home to a diverse, transient workforce including fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers as well as long-term resident families.

Despite its remote location in the Pilbara's arid interior, Newman is a surprisingly well-serviced community with a major shopping centre anchored by Woolworths, a hospital, sporting clubs, and a range of dining options. The town is maintained to a high standard thanks to BHP investment, with landscaped streets, parks, and recreation facilities including a swimming pool and gym. The Karijini National Park — one of Australia's most spectacular gorge landscapes — is just 90 minutes away, drawing tourists and adventure seekers. Newman attracts workers drawn by above-average incomes in the mining sector, and has a strong community culture despite the high turnover of FIFO residents.

Newman falls under postcode 6753 and is governed by East Pilbara Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Pilbara electorate.
