About Niangala
Niangala is a remote rural locality in the New England Tablelands region of New South Wales, situated within Walcha Council on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The locality is one of the larger by land area in the region, covering almost 692 square kilometres of grazing country, and is accessed via the Niangala-Walcha Road. With a 2021 Census population of 149 residents and one of the lower median incomes in the state, Niangala is a sparsely settled farming community in one of New England's most tightly held pastoral districts.
The landscape around Niangala is characterised by open New England grazing country, river flats, and timbered ridges, making it prime mixed farming territory for beef cattle and sheep. The nearest major service centre is Walcha, around 30 kilometres to the north, which provides schools, supermarkets, and basic services for the surrounding district. Niangala suits landowners and farmers seeking productive rural country at the southern end of Walcha Council, with Armidale accessible for a wider range of services and Tamworth within a couple of hours by road.
Niangala falls under postcode 2354 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Upper Hunter electorate.
