About Nimmitabel
Nimmitabel is a small historic town in the Monaro region of south-east New South Wales, situated on the tablelands at an elevation of 1,075 metres approximately 37 kilometres south-south-east of Cooma and 75 kilometres west of Bega. With a population of 324 at the 2021 census and covering around 140 square kilometres of high country, the town sits in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council local government area. The name Nimmitabel derives from an Aboriginal word meaning 'the place where many waters start or divide', reflecting the divide between coastal and inland river systems. It falls within the federal electorate of Eden-Monaro and the NSW state electorate of Monaro.
Nimmitabel is a classic Monaro high-country village with a well-preserved historic streetscape, cool-to-cold climate and strong pastoral heritage based on fine-wool merino grazing. The town has a primary school, a hotel, community hall and basic services, with residents travelling to Cooma for most shopping, medical and secondary education needs. The high-country landscape is stunning — rolling grassy tablelands, rocky outcrops and big skies — and attracts visitors travelling between the coast and the Snowy Mountains. Nimmitabel has a loyal and close-knit community, with the town's character shaped by generations of Monaro pastoralists.
Nimmitabel falls under postcode 2631 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
