About Ningaloo
Ningaloo is a remote rural locality on the Coral Coast of Western Australia, situated approximately 1,200 kilometres north of Perth near the famous Ningaloo Reef. The locality encompasses a vast 509 square kilometres of coastal land within the Gascoyne region and shares its name with the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast. With a tiny permanent population of fewer than ten residents, it is one of Australia's most sparsely settled named localities. The surrounding area is characterised by arid coastal terrain, spinifex scrubland, and dramatic ocean frontage.
The primary draw of the Ningaloo locality is proximity to the Ningaloo Reef, Australia's largest fringing reef and a world-class marine ecosystem home to whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, and hundreds of coral and fish species. The nearby town of Exmouth serves as the service hub for the area, offering accommodation, supplies, and tour operations for visitors to the reef. This locality attracts eco-tourists, divers, snorkellers, and nature lovers seeking one of the world's most pristine marine environments.
Ningaloo falls under postcode 6701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
