About Nymagee

Nymagee is a remote outback village in the central-west of New South Wales, located 89 kilometres south of Cobar and approximately 618 kilometres north-west of Sydney. With a population of 96 at the 2021 Census spread across a vast 4,277 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely populated localities in the state. The village sits within the federal electorate of Parkes and the state electorate of Dubbo, in the heart of the western NSW plains.

Originally a thriving copper mining town that supported a population of over 2,200 at its peak, Nymagee declined sharply after the mine closed in 1917 and was nearly considered a ghost town by 1949. The area has strong links to Australian literary heritage — the famous sheep station 'The Overflow', immortalised in Banjo Paterson's poem 'Clancy of the Overflow', lies about 32 kilometres to the south-east. Today, the Nymagee Hotel remains the social heart of this tight-knit outback community, and the surrounding country supports cattle and sheep grazing.

Nymagee falls under postcode 2831 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Dubbo electorate.
