About Ogmore
Ogmore is a small rural locality in the Livingstone Shire of Central Queensland, situated approximately 130 kilometres north-west of Rockhampton and around 25 kilometres north-west of the township of Marlborough along the Bruce Highway corridor. The locality covers a substantial area of around 1,441 square kilometres of pastoral and coastal country, with 2021 Census figures recording a population of 72 residents. Originally known as Hartley, the town was renamed Ogmore in 1933 after a coal-mining town in Wales, reflecting the area's strong historic connection to the coal industry.
Ogmore's character is shaped by its remote rural setting and its legacy as a former coal-mining and railway service town; the Styx No. 3 coal mine operated near the town from 1924 until the mines closed in the 1960s. Today the locality is sparsely settled and largely pastoral in character, with residents relying on Marlborough or Rockhampton for most services and shopping. The area falls within the federal electorate of Capricornia and state electorate of Mirani, and the Bruce Highway provides the primary transport link for those travelling to and from the coast.
Ogmore falls under postcode 4706 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mirani electorate.
