About Overland Corner
Overland Corner is a small historic locality on the banks of the Murray River in the Riverland region of South Australia, situated approximately 12 kilometres from Barmera and 215 kilometres north-east of Adelaide. Covering around 261 square kilometres, it recorded a 2021 census population of 64 residents. The locality sits at a distinctive bend — or corner — in the Murray River where 19th-century drovers and overlanders herded livestock between New South Wales and the Adelaide Colony, giving the area its evocative name.
Overland Corner's historic focal point is the Overland Corner Hotel, constructed of fossilised limestone walls 1.5 metres thick and recognised as the oldest building in the Riverland. Originally established as a watering hole for drovers and passing steamers, the hotel was famously visited by the bushranger Captain Moonlite. Today the area is a popular stop for houseboaters and road-trippers, with Murray River Lock 3 nearby drawing fishing and boating enthusiasts. The wider community relies on Barmera and Berri for day-to-day services.
Overland Corner falls under postcode 5330 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Chaffey electorate.
