About Owanyilla
Owanyilla is a rural town and locality in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, situated approximately 20 kilometres south-west of Maryborough and 242 kilometres north of Brisbane. The locality covers around 43 square kilometres, with the Mary River forming its western boundary and Old Gympie Road running through it as the main artery. At the 2021 Census, Owanyilla had a population of 245 people, and is governed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
The locality has a long agricultural history — it was once the first stop south of Maryborough, and a state school operated here from 1880 until 1937. Today, most of the land is used for farming, predominantly cattle grazing with some mixed cropping along the river flats. Residents travel to Maryborough for schools, shopping, and healthcare, while Hervey Bay (approximately 50 kilometres to the north) provides access to a broader range of services. Owanyilla suits those who value a peaceful rural lifestyle close to the scenic Mary River corridor.
Owanyilla falls under postcode 4650 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
