About Paloona
Paloona is a small rural locality in north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 16 kilometres south-west of Devonport within the Kentish Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 84 residents spread across a compact 7.8 square kilometres, it is a tightly settled farming hamlet on the fertile plains of the Kentish district. The locality's name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word, and it sits in a region historically associated with agriculture, particularly dairy, beef, and mixed cropping.
The surrounding countryside is characterised by productive farmland and rural residential properties, with Devonport serving as the primary hub for shopping, schools, healthcare, and the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal. The nearby town of Sheffield, known as the "Town of Murals", is also within easy reach and offers cafes, galleries, and services. Public transport options are very limited in Paloona, making a private vehicle essential for daily life. Residents enjoy a quiet, semi-rural lifestyle with ready access to the amenities of north-west Tasmania's coast.
Paloona falls under postcode 7310 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
