About Parawa
Parawa is a small rural locality situated on the ridge of the Mount Lofty Ranges on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, approximately 74 kilometres south of Adelaide within the District Council of Yankalilla. Covering around 75 square kilometres, the locality recorded a population of 91 residents in the 2021 Census and is characterised by primary production land use across rolling hills and elevated terrain. The name Parawa derives from an Aboriginal word for the nearby headland of Cape Jervis, and was formally approved as a locality name in 1999.
The locality is predominantly farmland, with some land along its southern boundary protected within Waitpinga Conservation Park, offering native bushland and biodiversity conservation close to the Fleurieu coast. The nearby township of Yankalilla, approximately 11 kilometres to the north, provides essential services including schools, shops, and community facilities for Parawa residents. Cape Jervis — the departure point for the Kangaroo Island ferry — is within easy reach, giving the area additional significance as a passage point for travellers heading to Kangaroo Island, while the broader Fleurieu Peninsula offers popular coastal destinations including Normanville and Second Valley.
Parawa falls under postcode 5203 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mawson electorate.
